The Architect

Durham Lakes Golf and Country Club is pleased to present our course architect, Mr. Scott Pool:

Scott Pool grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida. He retrieved golf balls from the lakes on the golf course where he lived and sold them to golfers there. He hit the bad ones out into the woods. That is how he learned to make good contact and was eventually hooked on the game. Scott was a high school golf teammate of LPGA star Colleen Walker. He worked during the summer for famous architect Joe Lee and became interested in golf course design. He pursued an agronomy degree at Lake City College and interned for Pete Dye performing common labor during the week and ran a dozer on the weekends at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head.

Upon graduating, Scott began his career work at The Honors Course in Chattanooga working on the irrigation installation and getting an opportunity to perform some shaping. His work with the Pete Dye family continued at TPC Plum Creek in Castle Rock, Colorado. From Pete Dye he learned to build the course in the field, not always following the exact plans laid out on paper. He embraces that concept today, making improvements all during the construction process. Scott possesses a great talent for tweaking his design with the nuances that collectively create an outstanding layout.

Other clubs where Scott ran the operation for the Dye family include: Firethorn in Lincoln, Nebraska, 36 holes at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin - voted course of the year in it's debut and host of the USGA Women's Open in 1998, Old Marsh in West Palm Beach, Florida, Grand Harbor in Vero Beach, Florida, Carlton Oaks in El Cajon, California and The Ocean Course at Kiawa Island, South Carolina - site of the Ryder Cup matches.

Scott also built three courses for Jerry Pate: Bruton Country Club in Bruton, Alabama, Cane Brake in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Kiva Dunes in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

His projects include: Mountain Air in Burnsville, North Carolina, Legend Oaks in Summerville, North Carolina, Waterfall at Lake Burton and Kingwood Resort in Clayton, Georgia, Eagle's Brooke in Locust Grove, Georgia, and Durham Lakes in Fairburn, Georgia.

It is our hope that when you experience Scott's handiwork first hand that you will embrace his vision for Durham Lakes as we did.
